There's something magical about standing on the Northumberland coast, climbing aboard a small boat and heading out across the North Sea towards the Farne Islands.
Long before the islands come into view you'll often spot grey seals bobbing inquisitively in the water, seabirds wheeling overhead and, if you're lucky, dolphins surfacing alongside the boat.
For nature lovers, photographers and families alike, the Farne Islands are one of the most unforgettable days out in Northumberland.
Why Visit the Farne Islands?
The Farne Islands are an internationally important wildlife sanctuary managed by the National Trust. Although they're only a few miles offshore, they feel like another world.
The islands are home to thousands of seabirds, England's largest colony of grey seals and an incredible variety of marine life.
Every visit is different, which is part of their charm.
Puffin Season
If seeing puffins is on your bucket list, the best time to visit is between late April and the end of July.
During these months the islands become alive with colour as thousands of puffins return to nest.
Watching these charismatic little birds carrying tiny silver fish back to their burrows is something you'll never forget.
Photographers will find endless opportunities as puffins often come surprisingly close.
Seals, Dolphins & Whales
The Farne Islands are famous for their grey seal colony, with thousands of seals living around the islands.
Boat trips regularly pass close enough to see them relaxing on the rocks or swimming alongside the boat.
If you're fortunate, you may also spot:
Bottlenose dolphins
Harbour porpoises
Minke whales (occasionally)
Orcas (rare sightings)
Numerous seabirds including Arctic Terns, Guillemots, Razorbills, Shags and Kittiwakes.

Where Do the Boats Leave From?
Most visitors sail from the beautiful fishing village of Seahouses, around 20 minutes north of Bamburgh.
Several boat companies operate wildlife cruises throughout the season, offering a choice of:

Trips generally last between 1 and 3 hours depending on the experience you choose.
Bringing Your Dog
One of the things I love about Northumberland is how dog friendly it is.
Many Farne Islands boat operators welcome well-behaved dogs on board, making it possible to enjoy the trip with your four-legged companion.
Policies vary between operators, so it's always worth checking before booking.
