Discover Northumberland
People often ask me why I love Northumberland so much.
The answer is simple... it's home.
I grew up just a mile outside the beautiful village of Longframlington, where my parents lovingly restored an old coach house and converted the surrounding barns into The Besom Barn, a restaurant that became well known across the county. Some of my happiest memories were made there, surrounded by the countryside that first inspired my love of exploring.
Travel has always been a huge part of my life. In my younger years I backpacked through Australia, New Zealand, America, Mexico and Hawaii, before enjoying many wonderful holidays across the Caribbean, Africa and beyond. I've watched incredible sunsets on the other side of the world, explored famous landmarks and experienced some truly unforgettable places.
Yet no matter where I've travelled, I've always found myself drawn back to Northumberland.
It has a quiet beauty that's difficult to put into words. Wide open skies, endless beaches, peaceful forests and welcoming villages combine to create a county that never feels crowded, yet is full of incredible places waiting to be discovered.
Home to more castles than any other county in England, Northumberland is where magnificent fortresses overlook dramatic coastlines and centuries of history come alive. From Bamburgh Castle to the romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh and the grandeur of Alnwick Castle, there's always another story waiting around the corner.
Its coastline is equally unforgettable. Miles of golden beaches link picturesque villages such as Craster, Seahouses, Alnmouth and Beadnell, while inland you'll discover ancient woodlands like Thrunton Woods, the rolling landscapes of the Cheviot Hills, peaceful rivers and charming market towns that reward those who take the slower route.
This isn't a guide written from behind a desk.
These are the places I grew up exploring, the places I've returned to throughout my life, and now the places I want to share with you through Wendy Wanders. Alongside the well-known landmarks, I'll also be taking you to the hidden corners that many visitors drive straight past.
Whether you're planning a short break or a longer adventure, I hope these guides inspire you to discover why I believe Northumberland is one of the most beautiful counties in Britain.
Welcome to my home... let's explore it together. ❤️
