Walks & Countryside
One of the things I love most about Northumberland is that you don't have to go far to escape.
Within a few minutes, busy roads become quiet country lanes, villages give way to rolling hills, and the only sounds you'll hear are birdsong, the wind through the trees and the occasional sheep reminding you that you're firmly in the countryside.
For me, walking has never been about ticking off miles or climbing the highest peaks. It's about slowing down, breathing in the fresh air and discovering places that make you stop and appreciate the world around you.
Thrunton Woods
One of my favourite places has always been Thrunton Woods.
The forest trails wind through towering pine trees before opening onto spectacular viewpoints across the Northumberland countryside. Whether you're walking with your dog, enjoying a family day out or simply looking for a peaceful escape, it's somewhere I never tire of visiting.
Every season brings something different. Spring carpets the woodland floor with wildflowers, summer fills the forest with birdsong, autumn paints the trees in rich golds and reds, while winter offers crisp walks with breathtaking views across the hills.
The Cheviot Hills
If you're looking for bigger adventures, the Cheviot Hills are hard to beat.
Rolling hills, ancient hill forts and miles of open countryside make this one of the most beautiful walking areas in England. On a clear day, the views seem to go on forever, and despite their beauty, you can often walk for hours without seeing another person.
Riverside Walks & Pretty Villages
Not every walk has to be a challenge.
Some of my favourites are the gentle riverside paths through villages such as Rothbury, Warkworth and Longframlington, where you can combine a stroll with a coffee, lunch or a visit to one of the local pubs.
These are the places where Northumberland's slower pace of life really shines.
Discovering the Hidden Places
One of the greatest joys of living here is that there's always another footpath to follow, another woodland to explore or another viewpoint waiting around the next corner.
Some of the best places aren't marked in guidebooks at all.
They're the little discoveries you stumble across by taking a different path or stopping to admire the view just a little longer.
As Wendy Wanders grows, I'll be sharing my favourite woodland walks, scenic trails, circular routes, hidden viewpoints and dog-friendly adventures, along with plenty of photography stops that are worth taking your camera for.
Whether you're looking for an easy stroll, a challenging hike or simply somewhere peaceful to clear your mind, Northumberland has a walk waiting for you.
Sometimes the best adventures don't begin with a destination... they begin with a path. ❤️
